About Asociación Cojolya

Asociación Cojolya is a non-profit organization and member of Fair Trade, promoting development and empowering women of limited economic resources in the handicraft sector in weaving.

Cojolya was born in 1983 during the Civil War in Santiago Atitlán, Sololá, Guatemala, in order to support women victims and victims of the war. The lack of work, the devalued prices of handmade weavings and many families depending on these types of work motivated founder Candis Krummel (American) and Co-Founder Antonio Ramirez Sosof (Guatemalteco) to start a venture where the direct beneficiaries were the women weavers.

From the union, strength and desire of the craftswomen and artisans, together with the vision of Candis and Antonio, Asociación Cojolya was founded in 1996 to empower indigenous craftswomen to improve their quality of life and the preservation of the art of backstrap loom weaving, providing them with access to fair jobs and fair global markets.
