Putting Design in Its Place is a rallying cry to avoid the flattening of the world. Fogo Island Workshops creates design specific to the nature and culture of Fogo Island, Newfoundland & Labrador. International designers collaborate with local makers to hold on to cultural insights and practices, and preserve them in new forms, ensuring the traditions and economic opportunities of the island continue.
The contemporary furniture, textiles and homewares use the craft techniques that Fogo Islanders have held for hundreds of years and supports the livelihoods of dozens of local makers. Born out of the need to create furnishings for the Fogo Island Inn, the collection has expanded to other products which maintain the place-based approach. All profits are reinvested into the community through Shorefast, a registered charity which owns the social enterprise.
