Story

Samoolam meaning 'collective roots' in Sanskrit, was founded as a grassroots social movement in Gaya district of Bihar in India with the vision to use design as a powerful tool for social change. Today, the women-led organisation promotes the dying art of 'Crochet'. It has helped rural women from over 110 families who had little or no knowledge of the craft, earn their pride and livelihood through the creation of Craftmark certified authentic handmade, and sustainable fashion and lifestyle accessories.

Samoolam, a women-led grassroots enterprise, is a zero-waste craft brand using design as a powerful tool for social change to create inclusive & sustainable livelihood solutions for the rural women of Gaya, Bihar in India. Inspired by her mother’s homegrown talent and driven by her rich design education, Usha founded Samoolam to equip the women of Gaya with a hand skill to create everyday accessories using the one-needle yarn knitting art of crochet. Their willingness to learn new skills to create new products has led us to equip them with sustainable sovereignty & independence beyond their work with us, which has had a larger impact on their holistic wellbeing. As of today, Samoolam has trained 500 women and is currently working with a network of  110 artisans who had little or no knowledge of the craft, earn their pride and livelihood through the creation of Craftmark-certified authentic handmade, and sustainable fashion and lifestyle accessories.

Gender Equality sits at the heart of the collective efforts of Samoolam. Harnessing the potential of women artisans from semi-rural pockets of Bihar, India; and creating sustainable livelihoods with fair trade commercial practices is our contribution to the Indian artisan economy. Our empowerment process for women has been committed to effective advocacy for rights, new knowledge building, access to workspaces, and the creation of new networks in ways that push for equitable and inclusive change while reinvesting the profits to achieve our mission. Our products are a celebration of cultural knowledge, traditional craftsmanship, gender equity, environmental impact and commitment to serving our community - of women artisans & conscious consumers.
