Story

The various expressions of indigenous basketry, existing before the arrival of the conquerors, were later influenced by the technical knowledge brought by the Spanish and later by the Africans. This affected the diversity of materials and the use of elaborate objects that reach us today. In this way, the fusion with other cultures gave rise to the enrichment and variety of techniques, as well as the use of materials but also, in some cases, opened the door to transculturization.

The human in general assimilated basketry, along with other craft expressions. The learning of indigenous techniques and the use of soft, flexible and hard fibers with native raw materials, has given rise to a wide variety of objects.

On the other hand, many indigenous ethnic groups maintain inherited ancestral knowledge and transmit it from generation to generation. They do include some new materials or design adjustments, as a measure of adaptation of Venezuelan indigenous basketry for other purposes, especially tourist marketing.
