Benzoin is the balsamic resin of trees belonging to the genus styrax, which grows mainly in eastern and southeastern Asia. The resin incense obtained from this tree, known in Turkey as the rosary bush, has a sweet, vanilla-like scent when burned.

Today, its use as resin incense is common, especially in India, China, Russia, and Japan.
